The Wave

I grew up riding on the back of my dad’s motorcycle. Besides the obvious wind in the face exhilaration, one of the things I’ve always loved about it is “The Wave.”

It doesn’t matter if you’re on an Indian, Harley, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, or something else, if it’s safe to do so, riders for the most part wave at each other in passing.

I know nothing about the rider going the other way and he or she knows nothing about me, but in that brief moment, we enjoy a connection over our mutual love of riding.

I was thus pleasantly surprised when I learned to sail recently that boaters do the same thing! Just like with riding, it doesn’t matter what kind of craft you’re on, if you’re passing by and it’s safe to do so, you wave, and a moment of connection is shared. I love it.

Do you know of any other activities that do this?

Blessings,

Jennifer

  1. California supposedly has lots of friendly and laid back people, but I don’t see a lot of people waving to others. Though my mom did teach me to give a little wave in thanks when another driver does something nice to me. Sadly, outside of my husband, I’ve seen almost no one else do this over the past few years. It’s nice to know friendly gestures still exist outside of car drivers and I’ll be on the look out for it when I get outside again.

    1. I learned to wave at other drivers in thanks as well 🙂 it’s refreshing to find something that social distancing hasn’t made difficult. Whether on a motorcycle or boat, you’re far enough away not to worry but can still be friendly!

  2. The “Wave” started for this fellow in the late 60’s. It tends to draw you into a community and it really shows when you stop for fuel, food or anything and the conversation starts as you meet face to face. It’s not all perfect but the invitation to be in community is there. It’s your choice to take a step of faith.

    1. I’ve experienced this at gas stations! I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how friendly other bikers are and found everyone on the docks while sailing to be super friendly as well.

  3. That’s so cool! I’ve always been afraid of motorcycles, but I love the idea that riders and sailors wave at each other in passing! 🙂 I don’t know of any other examples off the top of my head, but I wouldn’t be surprised if horseback riders do the same! 😂
